Who is Shichida ?
Posted: November 22, 2007I mentioned in my blog about my committment to get my daughter into the Shichida method and what it is about. However, some ask who is Shichida ? Professor Makota Shichida is the founder of the Shichida Method. He is a leading world-wide revolution in education which is changing the way we understand children, their brain capabilities and their learning style. He is well-known public figure in Japan, having committed the past 40 years to experimenting with techniques to stimulate early development of right brain education in children begining in womb and continuing through adulthood. Over the years, he has founded 400 Child Academics in Japan. He gives credit to the Japanese children who have shown him what they are capable of achieving. He believes that if one child can do something, all children have the potential to do it. There, his message is a universal one. He believes all children are alike no matter they are from Japan or other countries.
He explains that most of the education is called left-brain focus but Professor Shichida curriculum methods is right-brain education. Thus, Shichida uses the term right brain education which differentiates from the left- brain, linear approach to learning. However, he recognizes that the right and left brain are not easily compartmentalized and that they work together in the many ways which he calls hemispheric synchronization.
Professor Shichida feels strongly that the habits of the heart shoudl precede whole-train training. Love between the parent and child must be present before the whole brain training can be effective because love between the parent and child is what activates the right- brain functions. He writes. ” Whole brain education is the education of mental and effective faculties.. Rather than a parenting style that is concerned with scholastic scores, we would like to promote a parenting style that understands the children’s mind; a parenting style that can develop the capabilities of the right brain”.
Professor Makota Shichida received many awards. Two main awards were:
1. Health and Medicine Sciences Grand Prize by Sweden Academy Medical Science Research Centre. This award is given to Japanese who have made long term and significant contributions to health and medical sciences and to world peace.
2. The Higashikuninomiya Invention Award in June 2003
” Inventions do not discriminate between the rich and the poor. It is more important to have each citizen of the country becoming little inventors, than to win 100 Nobel Prizes. It is my wish to start a one billion (Japan’s population) invention campaign.” Words of late Higashikuninomiya who as the honorary president of the Association for Invetions.
The award was given to Professor Shichida for his efforts in promoting inventions. The invention award is given to people who, for many years, place emphasis on developing creative ideas and intelligent quotient (IQ).
So, which parents do not want their child to maximize their brain potential and yet be intelligent in IQ and socially contributing to the goodness of the mankind. Thus, with such belief in this method, I am on his programe in Singapore run by Superachievers Pte Ltd.
