Give Teens Room to Grow

If your teenager starts to pull away from the rest of the family, what can you do about it ?

I hear from a lot of parents who struggle with teenage withdrawal. It is not that these kids are rebelling; they are just spending more time alone in their room, or hanging out with their friends.

I tell parents this is usually a normal phase of individuation. Teens are begining their journey into adulthood; they want to be independent and needs a little bit of space away from their parents. It may not be something we should keep a close eye on.

It is common for teens to seek their own identity and it is best to given them room to grow.

But when you sense that your teen may be angry or depressed, or when grades start to slip, then it may be time to step in and try to figure out what is going on in his or her life.
