Postpartum Depression
Posted: August 27, 2008How can a new mother tell if she is struggling with postpartum depression ? That’s an important question because well over half of all new mums struggle with some form of depression after giving birth. Most are simply experiencing the ” Baby blues”, which is slight emotional slump that lasts for a week or so.
But some cases are more serious, and about one in ten new mums experiencee postpartum depression. This is not only is a lot more serious and lasts longer, but can have a profound effect on how the mother cares for her baby.
In situations like that, the monther needs to see a doctor for treatement. In very rare cases, mothers may experience what we call postpartum psychosis.
The key is learning to recognise depression when it sets in , and not to be embarassed about it.
I encourage new Dads to watch their wives for any signs of depression and to quickly seek help if they suspect a problem.
